I stopped texting only when I needed something

From: Mike

“I realized my text history with my wife looked like a grocery list mixed with a logistics manual.

It was always: ‘Did you get the milk?’ ‘Who’s picking up Sam?’ ‘What’s for dinner?’ I only pulled my phone out to talk to her when there was a problem to solve or a task to coordinate. To her, my name popping up on her screen just meant more ‘work.’

I tried the ‘Check-In’ challenge yesterday.

Around 2:00 PM, right in the middle of a crazy shift, I sent a simple text: ‘Just wanted to say I’m thinking about you. Hope your day is going well. See you tonight.’

I didn’t ask for a favor. I didn’t ask what was for dinner. I just hit send.

She replied almost immediately with a heart emoji and said, ‘You have no idea how much I needed that today.’

When I got home, she wasn’t ‘on edge’ like she usually is.

It turns out, she just wanted to feel like I actually thought about her when we weren’t in the same room.

It took me ten seconds to change her whole day.”

What I learned from this message.

Mike hit on a core truth: You have to be a person to her, not just a coworker in the ‘Business of Home.’

When the only time you communicate is for logistics, she starts to feel like an employee rather than a partner.

A “zero-agenda” text is like a small deposit in her emotional bank account. It tells her that she is a priority, not an afterthought.

You don’t need to be Shakespeare, you just need to be present.

That ten-second text buys you more goodwill than an hour-long conversation about the mortgage ever will.
